The Waikapu Country Town project is to be located in the area of Maui Tropical Plantation. This is a huge project, some call it a "city", which will occupy nearly 2,000 acres of land below the West Maui Mountains. Original plans call for 1,433 single-family, multifamily and rural units plus 146 ohana units, a large commercial space, parks, open space, a school, and an agricultural preserve. The Maui County Coucil approved 3 bills in September 2019 which green-lighted the project. Infracture such as water and sewer will be the initial undertakings. Owner and deveroper, Mike Atherton has a reputation of listening to the community and not moving forward with a project the community does not want (a.k.a., the shelved plans for a project above Ma'alaea). Mr. Atherton says this is at least a 10-year project and perhaps more depending on the state of the economy. Additional information will be included here as the project moves forward.
At thr timee the Maui County Council approved this project (September 2019, the build-out was projected to be complete in ~10 years if conditions remain good. Read more in a Maui News article.
